The Risks Of Collagen Supplements

Collagen supplements are used for the prevention and treatment of conditions related to the joints, bones or skin. But, what are the risks?

Collagen supplements help reverse the natural loss of collagen in the body as a result of the passage of time. But they must first be prescribed by a specialist doctor.

It is the most abundant protein in the human body, produced by the organism itself. Collagen has a fiber-like structure to provide consistency to the epidermis, hair, bones, tendons, cartilage and teeth.

We also find it in the tissues that surround and protect muscles and internal organs. Supplements are  primarily used in the prevention and treatment of conditions related to the joints, bones or skin. However, they carry some risks… Do you want to know them?

Types of collagen supplements

According to the results of research published in the Journal of Dermatology Drugs, the benefits of collagen supplements for wound healing and skin elasticity are increasingly categorical.

With medical approval, it is possible to find them in different presentations:

  • Capsules, liquid or powder for oral use.
  • Creams with collagen. They help prevent and reduce wrinkles.

Collagen powder.

  • Injections. They make the skin look better because they make it firmer. In addition, it has been shown to have a lasting effect up to a maximum of 12 weeks, but they are not permanent.

What are the contraindications for collagen supplements?

In general, anyone can take these types of supplements. But on  medical prescription and under progressive surveillance.

However,  it is important to know the contraindications of collagen. And, therefore, the risks of doses higher than recommended.

If you are taking any supplements or medicines containing calcium

If you are taking calcium, try to avoid ingesting marine collagen. As explained in a study conducted by the University of Sonora and published in the Journal of Biological and Health Sciences , this protein is extracted from cartilage and bones.

So  the supplements already contain enough calcium. Therefore, if you combine them with calcium supplements, you can suffer from hypercalcemia with the following symptoms:

  • Bone pain.
  • Fatigue: As calcium builds up in the blood, it takes longer for red blood cells to carry oxygen to different parts of the body.
  • Vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Irregular heartbeat : The pulse fluctuates because the heart has to work harder to pump blood.

Pregnancy and breast feeding

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should  consult a doctor if they wish to take supplements.

In addition, it is preferable that collagen supplements (if recommended) are pure in order to avoid harmful substances. They must also come from bovine sources, as fish and seafood present a greater allergic risk.

Side effects of collagen supplements

While the topical application of collagen is more or less safe,  side effects can occur with the supplements.

Gastrointestinal disturbances

According to the results of a study conducted in 2016 by several researchers from the Center for Musculoskeletal Health (University of California), out of 191 volunteers, 14 developed gastrointestinal disorders after taking collagen supplements.

Although this side effect is rare, it is possible that it can occur in some cases.

A young woman suffering from stomach pain.

Among these symptoms we can mention: diarrhea or constipation, stomach acidity and a feeling of full stomach.

Bad taste in the mouth

Most supplements are tasteless. But since some of them come from marine foods, they tend to have a strong aftertaste as well as a strong odor. This then causes a bad taste in the mouth after ingestion.

Skin disorders

Even though this is rare and there is insufficient scientific evidence, some people  taking collagen supplements have skin conditions  due to an allergic reaction that has not been discussed with the doctor beforehand.

Hypersensitivity reactions

Depending on the source of extraction,  there may be an increased risk of an allergic reaction.

As stated in an article published in the journal Nutrition and Health, fish, seafood and eggs are the most widely used foods as a source of extraction. In this case, the allergic reactions are directly related to the origin of the collagen.

Which collagen supplements to choose?

It is better to opt for hydrolyzed collagen. The hydrolyzed collagen is subjected to a treatment which separates the protein into smaller particles,  which improves its absorption.

Also choose pure versions. Because some contain chemicals and other ingredients to improve the texture and facilitate its absorption without resorting to the process of hydrolysis. These additional substances may have their own contraindications.

In addition, it is also necessary to take into account the source of extraction. Particularly if you are or think you are allergic to a food.

In case of any doubt, consult a specialist

Over the years, the body loses its ability to produce collagen. We therefore use supplements to delay skin aging and strengthen bones and joints.

However, as you have seen, some side effects may appear. It is therefore always preferable to consult a professional beforehand. He will then perform the tests necessary  to take the supplements safely.
